Significance of the Project

全球变暖对生态和环境产生了严重影响,也导致了极端天气与气候事件的频率与强度增加,使得世界范围内气象灾害更频繁地出现,我国尤其严重。为了防止生态环境的进一步恶化,减少天气、气候灾害的损失,必须深入研究全球变化的机制和原因,并预测未来的变化趋势,以便制订应对措施,而这必须从了解各圈层之间繁复的相互作用出发。因此,耦合各圈层的地球系统模式就成了全球变化研究最重要的、不可替代的研究工具之一。


地球系统模式中相关并行算法与软件实现技术在我国是薄弱环节,制约着我国地球系统模式的发展,同时也严重制约我国参加气候变化模拟实验的能力,进而严重削弱我国参与气候变化外交谈判的能力和国内应对气候变化的科学决策能力。高性能计算是地球系统模式研究极其重要甚至不可或缺的支撑研究手段。地球系统模式既可依托国产高性能计算机的发展而发展,也能够作为国产高性能计算机的重要牵引。由于发达国家一直在尖端的科技产品方面对我进行技术封锁,我们不可能从国外买到最先进的高性能计算机,更不可能从他们那里得到与地球系统模式研制相关的前沿支撑技术,因此,开展地球系统模式中高性能算法与耦合器技术的研发,不仅瞄准国际前沿,而且是加速发展我国地球系统模式的需要,符合国家战略发展需求。
 

Global warming heavily affects ecology and the environment and results in an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather and climate events, leading to an increase in the frequency of meteorological disasters, especially in China due to its complex underlying surface and its location in a typical region of air-sealandinteractions. To prevent further deterioration of ecology and the environment, and to reduce the losses resulting from weather and climate disasters, it is important to develop methods that will allow us to intensively study the mechanisms and causes of climate change, predict the tendency of its future variations, and seek solutions accordingly. To achieve this, we must understand the interactions among the earth's different systems. A software program that couples the earth's systems called the Earth System Model (ESM) has become a fundamental and irreplaceable tool for global climate change research.


The parallel algorithms and software implementation of the ESM have not been fully developed for our country, which is one of the important factors to heavily affect the development of our portion of the ESM, to restrict our climate change simulated experiments for Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), and thus to impairs our diplomatic negotiating ability and our scientific and decisionmaking abilities on the topic of climate change. High-performance computing is a critical technology solution for research using the ESM. On one hand, the ESMcould benefit from using domestic, high-performance computers. On the other hand, it could facilitate the development of future domestic, high-performance computers. Because of the blockade on new techniques and top technical products, we are unable to obtain state-of-the-art, highperformance computers or access the leading technology found in the ESM from developed countries. Therefore, developing high-performance, parallel algorithms and coupling technologies will not only enable us to move to the international forefront of technology, but it will also accelerate the development of our ESM, which aligns with the requirement of our national strategy.
